On January 1, 2012, Macleod Dixon and Norton Rose OR merged forming a new legal and business pipeline to the world. The firm will be known as Norton Rose Canada—a global leader in energy and mining law and the only major Canadian legal practice with offices in Latin America.

The merger adds depth to Norton Rose Canada’s resources across its six key industry sectors—financial institutions, energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; technology and innovation; and pharmaceuticals and life sciences. In particular, Norton Rose Canada’s energy and infrastructure, mining and commodities sectors have been greatly strengthened.

Norton Rose Canada is a top three Canadian legal practice and has more than 700 lawyers based in Calgary, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, Québec, Caracas and Bogotá. It is one of a small number of Canadian firms with a leading practice in each of the three main markets in Canada—Calgary, Toronto and Montréal.

John Coleman, Managing Partner of Norton Rose Canada said:

“Norton Rose Canada can serve clients in new ways with a broader international reach and unmatched strength in key business sectors. With offices in Latin America and as a market leader in Calgary and western Canada, we are a new Canadian powerhouse.”

Bill Tuer, Integration Partner of Norton Rose Canada said:

“We are very excited about helping our clients continue to grow in Canada and globally. We can now support them through stronger offices in Canada and in key international markets. In the energy sector, there is a strong global focus on western Canada and more than ever, investment is flowing into and out of the region. We've expanded globally for 20 years and creating Norton Rose Canada was a client-driven decision. This isn't our first international rodeo, but it's our biggest."

Peter Martyr, Group Chief Executive, Norton Rose Group said:

“This is a great step going forward for the Group. This merger delivers real strength in energy and mining in emerging markets such as Latin America, Central Asia and Russia. In Canada, the merger means we now have close to 700 lawyers across all the key markets, making us one of the top three legal practices in the country.”

The enlarged Norton Rose Group is one of the five largest international legal practices, with more than 2,900 lawyers in 43 offices throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia.

John Coleman will continue as the Managing Partner of Norton Rose Canada and Bill Tuer will join the Executive Committee of Norton Rose Canada and the Group.
