International legal practice Norton Rose Studio Legale has announced that Andrea Fiorelli will join as a partner in the Rome office to head the Italian tax practice. He will be joined by Claudio Grisanti (Of Counsel), Gabriella Sasso (Associate) and Maria Paola Serra (Junior Associate), all coming from Italian boutique tax law firm Di Tanno e Associati - Studio Legale Tributario. Francesca Staffieri, a senior associate in Rome, currently undertakes tax work for the practice and will work alongside the new tax team.

Andrea brings a wealth of tax experience, particularly in structuring high profile domestic and international tax matters in the context of complex corporate finance transactions, including cross-border and M&A deals. A significant part of his work involves tax litigation, both specifically in Italy and in the EU. He advises on the tax implications of wealth management in particular relating to succession planning and generational transfer of corporate entities, common in family-owned Italian medium-sized enterprises. Andrea has strong experience in Norton Rose Group’s key sector strengths of financial institutions and transport.

The hires will strengthen Norton Rose Studio Legale’s offering in Italy, adding significant tax capabilities to the existing strong corporate, banking, litigation and dispute resolution and antitrust and competition practices.

Paolo Daviddi, head of Italy at Norton Rose Studio Legale, comments:

“Andrea and his team are an outstanding fit for us. We are committed to strategic growth in Italy and that means adding specialist expertise which is relevant for our Italian and international clients. Tax is an area that plays directly into the current work we undertake, so being able to draw on the know-how and experience of Andrea and his team will ensure that we can offer a more complete “one-stop-shop” service for our clients.”

Louise Higginbottom, head of tax, pensions and incentives at Norton Rose LLP, comments:

“Tax remains an important area of focus for us in Europe. The practice has recently benefited from the hire of Uwe Eppler as a partner in our newly opened Hamburg office. The arrival of Andrea and his team further adds to our capabilities, bringing partner level expertise to the tax team already in Italy. It means we now boast 16 tax partners across our European offices.”

Andrea Fiorelli comments:

“Tax advice - whether it relates to Italian or international tax structures - plays a key role across complex corporate finance scenarios and banking transactions. It is exciting to be joining a legal practice with as much depth of expertise and commitment to international growth as Norton Rose Group. I will be able to offer my own clients access to a strong full service Italian team as well as an international platform covering all their needs for legal advice.”

Andrea started his career in 1988 in the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Financial and Fiscal Police). He then worked during 1995 and 1996 for the European Commission in Brussels in the anti-fraud coordination unit, now called OLAF, and was actively involved in international criminal and administrative investigations concerning tax, VAT, excise and customs. In 1996 he was admitted to the Rome Bar and in September 1996 he joined Di Tanno e Associati, where he was promoted to partner in 2006.
