In 1999, Charles Morgan, then general counsel of BellSouth Corp., brought the issue of diversity in the legal profession to widespread attention with his “Diversity in the Workplace: A Statement of Principle.” Hundreds of general counsel at major corporations signed on to it in the years that followed. Today, with companies of all sizes operating in the global economy, the number of women general counsel and those in the C-suite continues to grow.
Law firms, however, have not kept pace with corporations, which are pressuring firms to show progress.
