Norton Rose Fulbright advises Urbaser and Balfour Beatty on waste-to-energy project

Business January 27, 2016

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised the Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) consortium in relation to its contract with Gloucestershire County Council to build a waste-to-energy plant, which will process up to 190,000 tonnes of residual waste per annum.

The facility will manage the waste from Gloucestershire’s c.600,000 residents by diverting over 92% of Gloucestershire’s residual waste from landfill, reducing carbon emissions and the release of greenhouse gases. The facility would also create enough electricity to power approximately 25,000 homes.

Mark Berry, partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, comments:

“We have worked with Urbaser and Balfour Beatty for a number of years on this significant and challenging project, and are delighted to bring it to a successful second financial close."

“This transaction further underpins the huge potential in the UK to harness energy from domestic waste streams whilst at the same time reducing reliance on landfill.”

Matt Hardwick, partner leading on the transaction, comments:

“This state of the art facility will transform the way in which municipal waste is handled in Gloucestershire, creating jobs, generating renewable energy and diverting waste from landfill.”

The Norton Rose Fulbright team also included senior associate Jenny Waites and associates David Carter and Matt Hacking. Partner Wasim Khan and associate, Michelle Savitz advised on real estate aspects of the transaction.

Norton Rose Fulbright continues as a leading firm in the waste-to-energy sector, advising on the market’s flagship transactions. The team most recently advised Full Circle Generation Limited on its 14.75 MW waste-to-energy project in Belfast, in November 2015.
