Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has recruited experienced M&A practitioner Adam Edelman as a partner in the Australian corporate team, based in Perth. The firm also announces the promotion of high quality Sydney-based M&A lawyer Raymond Lou to the partnership.
Mr Edelman will return to the firm after working in the Perth office from 2003 to 2010, eventually rising to the position of senior associate before transferring to the Hong Kong office of Norton Rose (as it was then known) as a senior associate in 2010. He then spent several years working in the corporate team in Hong Kong.
From 2012 he gained considerable international experience working in-house for major financial institution HSBC, focussing on M&A work from its Hong Kong, Dubai and London offices, including in the role of associate general counsel M&A. In that time he amassed deal experience in more than 30 countries.
Mr Edelman will add to the strong existing corporate focus of our Perth office, where we act for global clients and advise on global transactions and litigation. He will join the firm in September this year.
Mr Lou focuses on public and private M&A transactions and corporate governance, working from the firm’s Sydney office. His experience includes large cross-border transactions in Australia for clients in the energy and resources, infrastructure and financial institutions sectors. He is also proficient in corporate restructuring, private equity, leveraged acquisition and equity capital markets.
A native Mandarin speaker, Mr Lou has advised a number of private and state-owned clients in China with their investments into Australia. His promotion to the partnership is effective on July 1.
His promotion follows a round of partner promotions in January, when corporate and M&A partner Jyoti Singh (Melbourne); banking and finance partner James Morris (Sydney); and insurance partner Matthew Ellis (Melbourne) were added to the partnership.
Norton Rose Fulbright managing partner in Australia, Wayne Spanner, commented:
“Today’s announcement demonstrates our continuing investment in our national corporate practice.
“We are delighted to welcome Adam back to the firm. It is always pleasing to welcome back one of our strong performers, particularly when they have broadened their industry experience with a substantial role in several foreign offices of a major financial institution. Adam’s considerable international M&A experience will be an asset to our global, regional and national corporate teams, as will his deep understanding of both the financial institution and insurance industries.
“Raymond Lou is a rising star in our corporate practice and another with a strong record in cross-border deals. His broad industry experience, depth of corporate M&A work and fluency in Mandarin will bolster our offering not just in Australia, but in the Asia-Pacific region as well.”
Mr Edelman commented:
“When considering a return to a commercial law firm, I couldn’t look past Norton Rose Fulbright, with its comprehensive global offering and serious focus on the financial institutions industry. Having spent my career working throughout Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe, it was important that I was able to offer clients the depth of a genuinely global team and strong track record in cross-border M&A.”
Mr Lou commented:
“I am proud to be a part of Norton Rose Fulbright’s strong national corporate team, and to be joining the partnership at such an exciting time in the firm’s growth story. It has been rewarding advising a diverse group of clients in the energy, infrastructure and financial institutions industries, both here and in Asia, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with them in the years to come.”
Norton Rose Fulbright in Australia added eight lateral partners since January 2016: Peter Lamont, Ellen Thomas, Jacques Jacobs, Samantha Kelly, Peter Bowden, Samantha Maddern, Katherine Morris and Karo Lelai (principal in Port Moresby). The firm also promoted nine new partners to the Australian practice in the past year: Matthew Ellis, James Morris, Jyoti Singh, Jeffery Black, Ben Davis, Georgina Hey, John Moran, Tim Mornane and Meriel Steadman.
