On January 1, 2012, Macleod Dixon merged with international legal practice Norton Rose Group. Macleod Dixon's existing offices in Venezuela and Colombia became the Group's first offices in Latin America, and are now called Despacho de Abogados Miembros de Norton Rose, S.C. in Caracas and Norton Rose Colombia S.A.S. in Bogotá.

The enlarged Norton Rose Group is one of the five largest international legal practices with more than 2,900 lawyers in 43 offices throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia. The merger strengthens Norton Rose Group’s resources across its six key industry sectors—financial institutions; energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; technology and innovation; and pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

Elisabeth Eljuri, Partner at Despacho de Abogados Miembros de Norton Rose, S.C. said:

"This is a tremendous development for our business, our Latin American practice, and most importantly, our clients who now have access to the resources and scope of a truly global legal network. Norton Rose Group provides the broad range and depth of legal services our clients need in the evolving and expanding Latin American market. The Group’s strong interest in the region shows how attractive the Latin American economy continues to become on the world stage.”

John Coleman, Managing Partner of Norton Rose Canada said:

“Latin America is increasingly driving international business and we believe this will only continue. The region has world-class resources in energy and mining and is a key emerging market. This is very attractive to our Canadian and global clients. With offices in Latin America, we can now serve clients in new ways with a broader international reach and depth in key business sectors."

Peter Martyr, Group Chief Executive of Norton Rose Group said:

“This is another very exciting move for the Group and constitutes a significant step towards realising our ambition of becoming one of the world's leading providers of legal services. Venezuela and Colombia are increasingly influential economies for our global clients and the enlarged Group will be ideally positioned to support this growth. Our new Latin America practice can serve clients throughout the region and the merger delivers real strength in the key emerging markets of the world.”

In joining the Group, Macleod Dixon's Calgary, Toronto, Caracas and Bogotá offices have merged with Norton Rose OR LLP to create Norton Rose Canada LLP. Norton Rose Canada is now ranked in the top three Canadian legal practices.

Carlos Fernández-Smith will continue as Managing Partner of the Caracas office and Glenn Faass will continue as Managing Partner of the Bogotá office. John Coleman will continue as the Managing Partner of Norton Rose Canada and Bill Tuer has joined the Executive Committee of Norton Rose Canada and the Group.

Despacho de Abogados Miembros de Norton Rose, S.C. first opened in 1997 and has grown to be one of Venezuela's two largest legal firms with 50 legal professionals, serving a Fortune 500 client list.
