Andrew Haynes is an energy lawyer and the co-Head of our Brazil practice. He specialises in international M&A, joint venture and securities transactions; energy projects; and international energy arbitration; all with a primary focus on the oil & gas sector in emerging markets. Andrew is based in Brazil.
Andrew has more than 12 years’ experience of international and English law M&A and energy law projects and has been involved in Latin American energy transactions, projects and disputes since 2006. He was previously Assistant General Counsel Global Corporate with BP p.l.c., overseeing all M&A legal work for BP globally, including in Latin America. Prior to BP, Andrew served as Deputy General Counsel for BG Group plc (formerly British Gas and one of the largest foreign investors in Brazil) overseeing all M&A globally, and was previously BG Group’s Chief Counsel for South America, based in Brazil.
In addition to his transactional practice, Andrew is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and has significant experience managing international energy arbitration claims and political risks on behalf of international energy investors in emerging markets. Andrew also serves as an arbitrator in international oil & gas arbitration.
Andrew speaks English and Portuguese.

Andrew is the Chair of the International Practice Committee of the Institute for Energy law and is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.
Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy recently announced two initiatives to attract international investment in the mining sector, including opening a previously reserved area to private exploration and reducing restrictions on foreign ownership of projects along Brazil’s border area..
