John Liberopoulos is a dispute resolution lawyer based in Athens.
He specialises in shipping litigation with particular experience in charterparty and cargo claims, P&I and FD&D insurance matters, marine casualties as well as ship sale and purchase and shipbuilding contract disputes. He has also considerable experience in general commercial litigation and multi-jurisdictional disputes.
John has acted in a wide range of shipping disputes in LMAA arbitration and the English High Court. His experience includes a significant number of instructions on charterparty claims for owners, charterers and their FD&D Clubs. He has recently advised on issues of early re-delivery under a time-charter, off-hire, unseaworthiness and short loading and has successfully defended in arbitration on behalf of the owners a substantial claim for damages following the vessel's main-engine breakdown. On the shipbuilding litigation side, John has repeatedly advised buyers on a number of pre-delivery disputes and successful restructuring negotiations with Chinese, Korean and Japanese yards. He is currently acting for the Greek buyers of four tankers in two multi-million London arbitrations in their claim for a refund of the paid instalments following the rescission of the respective shipbuilding contracts due to excessive delays in their delivery by the yard.
John is “highly rated” for his work (Legal 500 EMEA 2011) and described as “a hardworking lawyer with bags of potential” (Legal 500 EMEA 2010).
He is dual qualified: he is a Greek lawyer (since 1995) and English solicitor (since 1998). John joined the practice in 2006. He has previously worked for a total of 10 years in two leading international shipping law firms in London and Piraeus.
