Michael Gaetani joined the Pittsburgh-Southpointe office in 2011. As an associate, he works with the litigation department.

Michael represents energy companies involved in litigation related to oil and gas drilling activities. He also has experience representing clients in cases involving insurance coverage arbitration, toxic tort litigation, construction litigation and Medicaid regulations. Additionally, he has advised clients regarding Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) compliance and e-discovery.

  • Education

    2008 - J.D., Washington and Lee University School of Law
    2005 - B.A., magna cum laude, Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics & Government (CLEG) and History, American University

    While in law school, Michael served on the Washington & Lee Law Review. He also studied abroad in London and has a certificate in international and comparative law from the University of San Diego. As an undergraduate, Michael held an internship with the U.S. Senate and was selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. 

    Michael is licensed to practice in all Pennsylvania State Courts, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Western and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania.

  • Representative experience
    • Assisted with defense of natural gas production company relating to claims of soil and water contamination, property damage and personal injury
    • Assisted with several cases involving validity of oil and gas leases
    • Assisted with litigation related to local ordinances targeting natural gas production and exploration activities, including seeking injunctive relief
    • Assisted with procedural challenges to validity of local ordinances and zoning decisions, which impact natural gas production
    • Assisted with successful appeal to state intermediate appellate court to uphold dismissal of state agency's complaint alleging violations of environmental protection laws and regulations
    • Assisted with the recovery of $150 million through international insurance coverage arbitration on behalf of large oil refining company related to claims arising from release of oil in dense residential area
    • Part of team of attorneys serving as national coordinating counsel for asbestos claims on behalf of large industrial valve manufacturer
    • Assisted with FCPA investigation related to acquisition by a U.S. company from an international developer of a sophisticated drilling software program
    • Represented long-term care facilities with respect to Medicaid eligibility for residents and recovery of unpaid balances through litigation in state court
