Norton Rose creates new Deputy Managing Partner role as international growth continues

23 June 2011

New Group Head of Corporate and two new leaders for Asia

International legal practice Norton Rose Group has appointed Tim Marsden as Deputy Managing Partner for Norton Rose LLP. This is a new role to support the Managing Partner and current Group Chief Executive, Peter Martyr, following the expansion of Norton Rose Group into Canada and South Africa on 1 June 2011.

Tim has long-standing management experience, having been Group Head of Corporate for nine years and part of the firm's senior management team. In addition, he retains his seat on Norton Rose Group's Executive Committee, the most senior level of central management for the Group.

Taking over from Tim as Group Head of Corporate is Hong Kong based David Stannard. David was formerly Head of Asia and now becomes one of three business-wide Group Heads, alongside London-based Jeremy Edwards as Group Head of Banking and London-based Deirdre Walker as Group Head of Disputes. This is the first time the practice has appointed a Group Head outside of London.

David has been involved in a significant number of prominent corporate transactions. He has advised leading international and local investment banks and companies on a wide variety of issues including listings and IPOs; public company takeover and merger transactions; rights issues and other secondary fundraisings; Hong Kong compliance issues under the Stock Exchange Listing Rules and the Codes on Takeovers and Mergers and Share Repurchases.

Following David’s appointment to Group Head of Corporate, Jeff Smith will become Head of South East Asia and Phillip John will become Head of North Asia. These roles replace the former Head of Asia position. Jeff Smith joined Norton Rose in 1994, moved to the Singapore office in 1999 and has been Head of the Singapore office since 2008. Phillip John previously practised as a solicitor in Hong Kong from 1992 to 2000 and joined Norton Rose in 2000 as Head of the Bangkok office. Phillip will relocate to Hong Kong later in the year.

Peter Martyr, Group Chief Executive, Norton Rose Group said:

“My congratulations to both Tim and David.

"As Deputy Managing Partner for Norton Rose LLP, Tim will help to manage and develop the business as we continue to grow internationally. Tim brings significant management experience and knowledge to this new role.

“David's appointment is the first time we have appointed a Group Head outside of London and reflects the increasingly global nature of our business. To better service our strong client base in Asia, we have also made the decision to create two Heads in Asia; one for each sub-region".

Tim Marsden, Deputy Managing Partner, Norton Rose LLP said:

“This is a new position within Norton Rose LLP and one that presents a new challenge to me. I look forward to helping the business and the brand achieve further success.”

David Stannard, Group Head of Corporate, Norton Rose Group said:

“I am excited to be taking on this global role, particularly with the expansion of the Group to include Canada and South Africa. Our business is becoming increasingly global and I will be focussing on our commitment to client service across the world.”
