Martin McCann is a banking lawyer based in London where he is the Head of our Infrastructure and commodities practice. His expertise includes all aspects of international mining and infrastructure finance from project to structured finance.
Martin is considered a leader in his field by all the leading texts, including the Chambers Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers. Among other accolades, he is described as "very commercial" in the Legal 500 2008.
He has a reputation for leading challenging projects, whether in terms of complexity, innovation or country of origin, and delivering commercial solutions to the satisfaction of all sides.
Martin has one of the most active mining finance practices in the City. On the borrower side he led the project finance team advising the project company on the award winning Lumwana Copper Mine Project in Zambia (Mining Deal of the Year 2007), advised project company Talvivaara on the project financing of its nickel mine in Finland (nominated for its aggressive time to reach financial close) and recently advised project company Kamoto on the first project financing into the DRC. On the lender side he is currently advising on the Çaldağ Nickel Laterite Mine in Turkey and the Dukwe Copper Project in Botswana. Martin is also currently acting on the restructuring of the hedge book for one of the major's. Another unique facet of Martin's mining CV is his in-depth knowledge of the Chinese market, having spent four years building a business in mainland China.
In addition to his expertise in the mining sector, Martin is a specialist in infrastructure finance and has acted on project financings in almost every infrastructure sub-sector. Examples include acting for SMIF in the creation of the largest portfolio of PPP accommodation assets, advising Netcare on the largest acquisition of healthcare assets in Europe and acting on the first Clinical PPP project to reach financial close. He has acted for almost all of the lenders in the infrastructure market on projects ranging from waste deals to social housing and property financing.
