Norton Rose Fulbright advises Sunrise Medical Group on strategic transaction with Concourse
Australia | Press release - Business | August 2025
A multi-disciplinary team from global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised global medical technology company Sunrise Medical Group (Sunrise Medical) on the exclusive distributorship arrangement with, and subsequent acquisition of, its Australian subsidiary of Concourse IP Pty Ltd and Concourse Assistive Technology Pty Ltd (together, Concourse).
Sunrise Medical is a recognised global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of assistive mobility products. It identified the power assist system developed by Concourse, originally for use in golf buggies and similar sporting equipment, which has been further adapted and developed by the team jointly together with Sunrise Medical into a highly innovative and light weight power assist device to support users of the complex rehabilitation manual wheel chairs.
The acquisition of the Concourse companies and their intellectual property expands Sunrise’s power assist technological and product portfolio, furthering their vision for accessible, resilient and adaptable mobility solutions across their global customer base.
Norton Rose Fulbright corporate M&A partner Ben Smits commented:
“This deal was remarkable and groundbreaking as an intersection between the sporting goods and medical technology sectors. It also involved bespoke acquisition structure, backed by a suite of commercial agreements which will govern the parties’ ongoing collaboration. We are pleased to have assisted long term and valued client Sunrise Medical on all legal aspects of this transaction.”
The Norton Rose Fulbright deal team was led by Sydney-based partner Ben Smits, with support from associate William Batt. Key supporting partners on the deal included Maija Kerry (commercial and consumer markets, Sydney), Georgina Hey (intellectual property, Sydney), Bernard O’Shea and Rohan Sridhar (technology, Melbourne), Alexandra Shields (employment, Sydney) and Greg Reinhardt (tax, Sydney).
