Ian is an antitrust and competition lawyer and heads the team in London. He splits his time between our offices in London and Brussels. He advises clients on all aspects of competition law with a particular focus on competition, cartel investigations and merger control.
Ian is recognized as a 'Leading Individual' in Chambers, The Legal 500 and Who's Who Legal, and was previously a finalist in GCR's 'Lawyer of the Year (under 40)'. Ian has been involved in numerous significant cases in recent years, including: acting for Asda in the UK Tobacco investigation and successful appeal; acting for PwC in the UK Audit market investigation; securing EU and other global merger control clearances numerous transactions, including Delta/Virgin Atlantic, Delta/AirFrance-KLM/Virgin, BP/SFRA; BP/Bunge, Thermo Fisher/Life Technologies; and securing unconditional Phase 2 clearance before the Competition Commission in Stena/DFDS.
In addition, Ian has acted for parties in cartel, dominance and market investigations in a wide variety of sectors, including: the air passenger; air freight; energy; shipping; groceries; pharmaceuticals; financial benchmarks; and freight forwarding before the UK, EU and other global regulators.
Ian held a senior role at the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) between 2008-9, which gives him particular insights into the regulatory approach and perspective. He is a frequent speaker, media commentator and author on competition issues, an editor of Butterworth's Competition Law and a leading member of the City of London Law Society Competition Committee.
