Richard Johnson is counsel in our intellectual property group. He is also a registered patent and trademark agent, and practises in all areas of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, designs, copyrights and trade secrets. He routinely works with innovative companies on strategic patent portfolio development in the mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer-related fields, and with brand owners on protecting and maintaining their trademarks.
Mr. Johnson assists clients with preparation and prosecution of Canadian and foreign patent and design applications, providing patentability, validity and freedom to operate searches and opinions, and patent portfolio management. He also assists clients with preparing and prosecuting Canadian and foreign trademark applications, trademark clearance searches, registrability opinions, and opposition proceedings.

In addition, Mr. Johnson provides advice on the enforcement of and defense against claims of infringement of intellectual property rights, conducts IP due diligence in the context of proposed mergers and acquisitions for both acquiring entities and those being acquired, and negotiates and drafts technology transfer agreements, development agreements collaboration agreements, license agreements and other technology-related agreements.

Prior to joining us, Mr. Johnson honed his skills practising at a leading IP boutique and as a member of the IP group of a top-tier national law firm.
