Norton Rose Fulbright announces PNG scholarship to support local legal profession

Firm February 23, 2017

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright is proud to announce today a scholarship to support the pursuit of quality in legal studies in Papua New Guinea, following the opening of its office in Port Moresby in November last year as part of an expanded Asia Pacific network.

The firm has created the scholarship to support PNG law students who have already shown a commitment to their undergraduate studies. It was announced at the firm’s official opening event in Port Moresby on February 23, 2017.

The 2017 scholarship has been designed to provide the recipient with ongoing support throughout their final year of undergraduate legal studies by providing up to PGK10,000 in payments and reimbursements for major costs related to their study and to reward high achievement in their final year studies.

In addition to the core scholarship, at the judging committee’s discretion, the firm may also select up to two additional applicants to receive a Highly Commended award of PGK1,000 each.

The scholarship reflects Norton Rose Fulbright’s commitment to giving back to the PNG community and investing in a strong and vibrant local legal profession. Community engagement was a strong motivation for the opening of the Port Moresby office last year.

Norton Rose Fulbright has a long history working in PNG, largely from its Australian offices, on cross-border transactions and projects. The firm has done significant work for the PNG Government and private enterprises over many years. Recently we advised on several high-profile energy, mining, infrastructure and telecommunications deals, engaged in dispute resolution, and also assisted in the development of key legislation. Much of this work has been done working closely with advisors based in PNG.

Norton Rose Fulbright managing partner in Australia Wayne Spanner commented:

“A recurring theme of our partnership discussions about establishing our first office in Port Moresby was the need to invest in the PNG community. This scholarship is an important step and demonstrates, along with the opening of our Port Moresby office and the growing suite of matters we are doing with our clients in the region, the seriousness of our investment in PNG.”

Norton Rose Fulbright principal in PNG, Mrs Karo Lelai, commented:

“When I joined Norton Rose Fulbright last year to head up its PNG office, I was impressed that the firm was already looking at ways to make a contribution beyond the provision of legal services. I have been a passionate advocate for young people in my home country for decades, through my community service and as chairman of the PNG Athletes Commission, various leadership roles with the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea, board member of the PNG Olympic Committee, and director of TISA Community Finance Ltd. This new scholarship will make a big difference to the recipients’ lives and I encourage all eligible PNG law students to apply.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, an individual must be a citizen of PNG, enrolled in an undergraduate degree with a major in law (eg, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Arts (Laws), etc), have completed the first three years of full time study (or part time equivalent) in the degree, and be continuing these studies in 2017. Applicants close at 5:00pm on April 28, 2017 and the successful applicants are expected to be announced on June 12, 2017.
