Norton Rose Fulbright advises Landis+Gyr on strategic partnership with Google Cloud

Germany Press release - People February 2021

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised Landis+Gyr Group AG (Landis+Gyr; LAND.SW) on the signing of a landmark multi-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud.

This is the first partnership of its kind in the energy management industry. It now enables Landis+Gyr to accelerate its transition to the cloud and jointly develop new products and services. At the same time, Landis+Gyr and Google Cloud are laying the foundation for the next generation of cloud-based energy management solutions for smart infrastructure and smart cities.

This partnership will enable utilities to manage the grid with greater visibility and end-users to use energy in a more sustainable way. For Landis+Gyr, this means more flexibility, strengthening cybersecurity and a sustainable reduction in costs.

Norton Rose Fulbright acted as lead advisor to Landis+Gyr on this transaction. The transaction was coordinated from the firm’s Frankfurt office and involved colleagues in London and New York. Niederer Kraft und Frey was closely involved in the Swiss data protection law.

Christoph Ritzer, the lead partner based in Norton Rose Fulbright’s Frankfurt office, commented:

"I am pleased to have assisted in the partnership between Landis+Gyr and Google Cloud, contributing to the use of smart metering and grid edge intelligence as well as data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning to take the development of the energy industry to the next level."

The Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) team was led by Frankfurt partner Dr Christoph Ritzer (IT and data protection law). He was supported by London-based IT partner Zayed Al Jamil, who assisted with the contracts under English law. From the US, New York partner David Kessler provided advice on the US CLOUD Act. Frankfurt associate Natalia Filkina provided support primarily on data protection law, and London associate Sally Hughes advised on English IT contract law.

The lead partner at Niederer Kraft and Frey (NKF) was their partner András Gurovits. The NRF and NKF team worked closely with the legal department at Landis+Gyr. The new general counsel Holger Klafs and his team were responsible.
