Total makes significant gas discovery off the South African coast

South Africa Press release October 2020

Total and its partners in 11B/12B made a second gas condensate find off the southern coast of South Africa.

The discovery of gas condensate – a light liquid hydrocarbon – was made in the Outeniqua Basin, which is located 175 kilometres off the southern coast of South Africa. This Luiperd gas discovery is adjacent to the ‘Brulpadda’ gas discovery of 2019.

Norton Rose Fulbright is honoured to have supported Total in their upstream South African journey of over 10 years in pursuing this truly groundbreaking opportunity. We congratulate the Total team that has persisted in exploration activities in the 11B/12B Paddavisie fairway under harsh sea conditions, in particular the drilling of the Luiperd exploration well in the midst of the global pandemic. While we wait for this second gas discovery to be evaluated, we look forward to seeing how it might positively change the energy picture of South Africa, which currently imports most of its gas.

Total is the operator of block 11B/12B with a 45 percent participating interest, alongside Qatar Petroleum (25 percent), CNR international (20 percent) and the South African consortium Main Street (10 percent).
