Norton Rose Fulbright advises the University of Wollongong on its Innovation Campus Health and Wellbeing Precinct Development

Australia Press release - Business March 28, 2019

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised the University of Wollongong on the commercial close of the $500 million development of a state-of-the-art Health and Wellbeing Precinct on the University’s Innovation Campus in Wollongong.

The University will partner with Lendlease to jointly design, develop and deliver a 7.5 hectare precinct centred around the University’s ‘intoHealth’ Primary and Community Health Clinic, alongside a 126-bed residential aged care facility, 199 independent retirement living units, an 80-place childcare centre and recreation facilities, as stage 1 of the project.

The ‘intoHealth’ facility will be Australia's first University-led clinic offering intergenerational, patient-centred healthcare. The ‘intoHealth’ facility and the precinct will integrate non-surgical health care and aged-care facilities within a research and teaching environment, providing opportunities for the University and its students to collaborate with private care operators to develop and deliver new models of patient-centred care while training the next generation of healthcare professionals. The development is a key part of the University of Wollongong’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

The Norton Rose Fulbright team advised the University through all procurement stages of the project up to commercial close.

Rob White, a project finance and banking partner in Norton Rose Fulbright’s Sydney office, said:

“We are proud to have acted for the University of Wollongong on yet another ground breaking project. We assisted the University to address a wide range of challenging issues, including long term collaboration arrangements with the retirement living and aged care facility operators, as well as working with academic staff to ensure a strong focus on the research and learning potential of the facilities.

Michael McKee, a real estate partner in Norton Rose Fulbright’s Sydney office, added:

“The Innovation Campus Health and Wellbeing Precinct, which is an Australian-first, will bring significant benefits to the community including researchers, academics, students, patients and their families. It is an ambitious project which we are thrilled to have partnered with the University on.”

The team was led by partner Rob White (project finance, Sydney) and partner Michael McKee (real estate, Sydney) with assistance from partners Nicholas Brunton (environment and planning), Kevin Arkwright (construction and engineering), Elizabeth Wild (environment and planning), Ben Smits (corporate M&A) and Jacques Jacobs (insurance); special counsel Thomas Kwok (environment and planning); senior associate Sarah Mansfield (environment and planning) and others from across the Sydney practice.
