Biography

Jim is a commercial lawyer based in our Sydney office with over 25 years’ experience in technology, media and telecommunications.

His main skill is in privacy, data breaches and cyber security, spam, cloud services including software-as-a-service (SaaS) arrangements, system integration agreements, outsourcing and service level agreements, information technology and intellectual property (IT/IP) issues, software licensing, and patent licensing.  He also regularly advises on Internet and telecommunications matters, IT procurement and cross-border data protection and data breach issues.  

His clients include the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Departments of Premier & Cabinet (NSW), Department of Justice (NSW), David Jones, Fujitsu, Infosys, HP, BlackRock Investments, Stockland, Bank of China, and Philips Electronics.  

Jim has also advised telecommunications companies such as Vodafone on privacy, spam, music licensing and industry codes such as the Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code.  

Jim gained his experience in large and mid-tier firms and while acting as in-house counsel at BTG plc (then the British Technology Group) working to license one of the world’s largest IP portfolios, and also with The University of Western Australia.  This year, Jim celebrated his 24th year of providing pro bono legal advice to the Arts Law Centre of Australia.

Jim regularly speaks at client and industry events on topics including cyber security, managing risks in the cloud, direct marketing and complying with privacy and laws, as well as on privacy compliance, service level agreements and social media.

Jim is also co-author of the book, 'Big Data, Big Responsibilities: A guide to privacy and data security for Australian business'.
