Biography

Sophie Bertin is an External Consultant based in Brussels. She advises on EU State Aid and EU Foreign Subsidies-related topics across industries, as well as regulatory, risk and compliance for financial services.

Previously, Sophie founded her own consultancy, and provided regulatory and compliance training.

Prior to founding her company, during the financial crisis, she was Head of Unit at the Directorate General for Competition within the European Commission and co-led the task force 'Financial Crisis'. Sophie was responsible for the review and approval of State aid provided by EU Member States to financial services during the financial crisis. She and her team negotiated the reorganisation or resolution of the banks in need of State aid, and often led an in-depth review of the bank's strategy, risk management and corporate governance.

Sophie has held senior positions within SWIFT, where she was globally in charge of Asset Servicing, The Bank of New York Mellon as well as in the Financial Services and Corporate Finance practice of McKinsey and later Bain &Co.

She graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, holds an MBA from INSEAD and a post-graduate diploma in EU Competition Law from King's College. 

 

*Representing DG Competition in the "Troika" reviews (comprised of the IMF, ECB and EC) in the Program countries (Portugal, etc.) and contributed to the restructuring of the banking sector.

*Contributed to the development of the guidelines for assessing banks' viability and implications of States' interventions, as well as to the new EU rules governing Financial Services since 2011.

She was member of the Executive Committee of the INSEAD Alumni organisation, and she is the current president of the Global INSEAD Women in Business Club.
