We welcome new employment and labour partner Bede Gahan in Canberra

Australia Press release - Firm March 2024

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright today welcomes new employment and labour partner Bede Gahan in Canberra.

Bede is highly experienced in Commonwealth public sector workplace relations matters and has become a trusted advisor to Commonwealth Government departments and agencies. He has a demonstrated record of excellent outcomes for the Commonwealth in highly sensitive and complex employment matters, such as industrial relations and enterprise bargaining, managing ill and injured employees, complaints and grievances, workplace investigations, unlawful discrimination complaints, public interest disclosures and work, health and safety matters.

Bede has run trials in the Federal Court and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, as well as in the Fair Work Commission and Australian Human Rights Commission.

He joins from national law firm HWL Ebsworth, where he was a partner in the Commonwealth Government team, with responsibility for the firm’s Commonwealth Government workplace relations and safety practice. Prior to that, he spent a decade working at Minter Ellison.

Norton Rose Fulbright chief executive partner in Australia, Alison Deitz, commented:

“Bede is an experienced and respected advisor to Commonwealth Government across a full array of workplace relations matters. His appointment adds further depth to our successful Commonwealth Government team working out of brand new offices at Constitution Place in Canberra, as well as our busy employment and labour partners around Australia.”

Bede Gahan commented:

“I was attracted to Norton Rose Fulbright because of its strong and growing Commonwealth Government practice, led by well-regarded Canberra partners, and the wider national government and employment and labour teams. I look forward to working for my clients and with my colleagues to continue to build the momentum the firm is generating in the Canberra market.”

This announcement follows the appointment in February of Kimberley MacKay (regulatory and disputes, Melbourne); and the appointment of Liz Hastilow (corporate and investment funds, Sydney), and the promotions of Kellie Link (restructuring, Perth), Maria Panos (dispute resolution, Sydney) and Jacqueline Plant (environment and planning, Melbourne), in January of this year.

Other additions in 2023 were: insolvency and restructuring partner Jenna Scott (Brisbane); consumer markets partner Nick Rimington (Melbourne); projects and construction partner Ben Bradstreet (Perth); financial crime partner Sonja Marsic (Sydney); corporate M&A partners Michael O’Neill and Tuanh Nguyen (Melbourne); international arbitration partner Daniel Allman (Sydney); cross-border litigation partner Paul Devlin (Perth); projects and construction partner Glen Warwick (Sydney), and real estate partner Astrid Beemster (Sydney).
