Biography

Lucy L’Hirondelle primarily handles commercial and aboriginal matters for clients in the energy industry, contractual disputes, securities and financial services disputes and various employment matters for management. She is also gaining experience in foreclosure.

Ms. L’Hirondelle has appeared before the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench and the Alberta Court of Appeal, and is familiar with Federal Court procedures through her work on files that went before the Federal Court of Canada.

Clients for whom Ms. L’Hirondelle has acted as a member of the legal team include:

  • Chevron Corp. in defence against attempts to enforce in Canada a US$9.5 billion judgment obtained against Chevron Corp. in Ecuador, which judgment has been found, after a trial in the United States, to have been obtained by fraud and corruption and is also being challenged before an international arbitration tribunal. The initial issue is whether the Ontario court has jurisdiction to hear the claim when Chevron Corporation has never had any presence or assets in the province
  • The Government of Canada in several multibillion dollar oil- and gas‑related claims brought by several Alberta First Nations
  • The developer and producer of an oil and gas company and a leading Canadian petroleum company in defence against a multimillion dollar claim for alleged violation of seismic data agreements and licences
  • One of the largest producers of crude oil from Canada’s oil sands with regard to royalty audit claims
  • The special committee of a major retail supplier of agricultural products with its proxy battle
  • A US‑based oil and gas company in litigation proceedings regarding a share and asset purchase and sale agreement
  • A railway company in litigation regarding an option agreement and subsequent preparation of the appeal
  • Management in employment litigation regarding the breach of a restrictive covenant  (acted as the second chair in the Alberta Court of Appeal)
