Biography

Michel Bélanger-Roy, a litigation lawyer based in our Montréal office, handles a wide variety of commercial, civil and public law disputes, and pleads before the Quebec courts and arbitration tribunals. He specializes in contracts, constitutional law, shareholder disputes and class actions. Mr. Bélanger-Roy also intervenes in urgent extraordinary proceedings such as injunctions and Anton Piller-type orders in matters of commercial fraud and unfair competition.

In 2023, Michel Bélanger-Roy was awarded the Pro Bono Rajpattie-Persaud Award by the Canadian Bar Association, Quebec Branch, for his commitment to public interest litigation to advance marginalized communities’ right to equality and for his involvement on the boards of non-profit organizations.

Civil and commercial law

  • A medical products distributor operating in the Middle East and North Africa, in an arbitration concerning the wrongful termination of a distribution contract.
  • Majority and minority shareholders, in connection with various oppression actions before the Quebec courts and in arbitration.
  • Several companies and individuals, in the context of appeals against Anton Piller-type orders in matters of commercial fraud and unfair competition, both as plaintiff and defendant.
  • A major Quebec manufacturer of graphics cards, in connection with a $25 million lawsuit relating to the sale of computer equipment.

Public law

  • Jeunes Identités Créatives/Gender Creative Kids Canada, as intervenor, in connection with a constitutional challenge to facilitate access for trans, non-binary and intersex people to official identity documents that correspond to their identity.
  • LGBT+ Family Coalition and two multi-parent families, plaintiffs in a constitutional challenge seeking legal recognition of multi-parent families in Quebec.
