Josh Smith is a corporate and commercial lawyer based in Ottawa. His practice focuses on major domestic and international infrastructure and project developments, project finance, M&A, regulatory compliance, and general corporate and commercial matters. Josh has advised sophisticated private and public companies on matters across a range of industries in Canada and abroad, including large-scale renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro, and storage), conventional oil and gas (upstream, midstream and downstream), mining (project finance, regulatory, EPC), water, transportation (rail and air), and electricity (transmission and infrastructure).
Josh has advised a range of clients on various matters related to ESG (environmental, social and governance) in the context of project financing and development, and is an active member of the firm's ESG practice group.
During law school, Josh held multiple research assistantships, completed an in-house legal internship with commercial counsel at a major international e-commerce company, received a Silver Medal in the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL)'s 2016 Global Legal Essay Competition (presented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 22) in Marrakesh, Morocco), and was awarded the University of Ottawa's Regional Senior Justice Prize in Appellate Advocacy.
Prior to joining us, Josh articled and practised with a leading national firm focussing on project-related issues, energy regulation and natural resource development in the Canadian energy sector (renewables, electricity, and oil and gas). Prior to law, Josh worked as a consultant in the energy sector in Canada and the Middle East, and as a conservation officer, mountain rescue specialist and climbing guide in the Canadian Rockies.
