The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced a new online portal for submitting applications to its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). At bottom, VPP permits employers, labor and OSHA to establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have already developed a comprehensive safety and health management system. Approval into VPP by OSHA constitutes official recognition of employer and employee efforts to achieve an outstanding occupational safety and health record.

The portal allows OSHA to review applications in real-time, and permits employers to upload supporting documents and complete their applications over time.

The agency developed the portal with input from both its staff and external stakeholders with the expectation that both employers and workers would benefit in their mutual efforts to work with OSHA in promoting workplace health and safety.

OSHA originally created the VPP in 1982 and provides this link to explain its function and scope: OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs.

Norton Rose Fulbright’s US OSHA Team is committed to assisting the firm’s clients in pursuing their OSHA compliance and workplace health and safety goals, conducting incident investigations and pursuing and litigating citation and penalty appeals.
