Biography

James Reid has practised out of our Montreal office in the areas of patents and intellectual property since 2001. He drafts many new originating patent applications every year, and prosecutes patent applications for both local and foreign clients in the Canadian and United States patent offices in addition to providing foreign filing strategy advice and coordinating multijurisdictional prosecution abroad. He also provides all types of opinions, including patentability, infringement, validity and right-to-manufacture opinions.

As one of our experts on design matters, Mr. Reid has a very active practice involving Canadian industrial design and US design patent matters, which includes preparing, filing and prosecuting design applications, as well as conducting design-around analysis and opinion work relating to registered designs.

Mr. Reid’s technical know-how covers mechanical technology of all types, with an emphasis on the aerospace, biomechanical and medical device fields, more particularly relating to gas turbine engines, orthopedic implants and related computer-assisted surgery systems for example. As well, Mr. Reid has considerable experience in the technical fields of vehicle tires, consumer goods and sporting equipment, with a focus on bicycles, ice hockey equipment and footwear.

He is registered to practise directly before both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has citizenship of Canada, the UK and Australia.
