Biography
Nuala Canavan is a competition lawyer based in London. She advises clients on all aspects of EU and UK competition law. She has a particular focus on contentious matters including competition litigation before the English High Court, Competition Appeal Tribunal and Court of Appeal, regulatory challenges (e.g. price control determinations for utilities and judicial review proceedings), and investigations by competition authorities (European Commission, UK CMA, and UK sectoral regulators).
Nuala has been involved in cartel damages actions before the English courts, including in relation to the foreign exchange and telecoms markets. She has advised clients in defending investigations by the European Commission and UK competition authorities. She also advises clients more generally on competition rules, including anti-competitive agreements, dominance issues and merger control rules, and on utilities regulation.
Nuala advises clients in a range of sectors, but has particular experience in regulated sectors, including financial services and energy networks. Nuala's experience is also informed by time spent outside of private practice, including secondments to two global financial institutions.
Prior to joining the practice, Nuala read law at Trinity College Dublin (First Class Honours) and obtained her master's degree in law (BCL, Distinction) from the University of Oxford, with a particular focus on Competition Law (awarded faculty prize 2012) and European Business Regulation.
