Biography

Chen Li is an associate in our business law group, working with our banking and debt finance, corporate-commercial and financial services and regulatory teams. He has a broad transactional practice, with an emphasis on banking and debt finance, including acting for lenders and borrowers on syndicated and bilateral bank finance, real estate finance, project finance, vessel financing and acquisition finance, as well as corporate finance and general corporate and commercial matters.

Chen also advises private lenders, mortgage brokers and financial institutions (including insurers, insurance intermediaries, banks and other regulated and unregulated financial service providers) on a broad range of regulatory matters. He was seconded to a Canadian Schedule I bank.

Chen joined us as a summer articled student in 2019, continued on as an articled student in 2020 and became an associate on his call to the bar in 2021.

Matters in which Chen has acted include: 

  • Providence Living Society in connection with its development and financing of a new long-term care facility in Prince George, British Columbia. The new non-profit long-term care home is modelled after Canada’s first public long-term care village on Vancouver Island
  • First Nations in connection with the development and financing of on-reserve housing
  • Artis REIT in connection with its $520 million senior secured syndicated credit facility
  • TD Securities, as arranger, and the dealers in relation to the Province of British Columbia's US$6 billion euro debt issuance program
  • Bird Canada Inc., an electric scooter and bike-sharing company, in connection with its merger with Bird Global, Inc. and issuance of secured convertible notes of Bird Global Inc
  • The agent and lenders in connection with $325 million syndicated credit facilities to a large forestry company with operations in Canada and the US
  • GreenFirst Forest Products Inc. in connection with its US$100 million financing agreement with Blue Torch Finance LLC to finance a portion of the US$235 million purchase price for forest and paper products assets from subsidiaries of Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. and its C$65 million revolving credit facility with Royal Bank of Canada
