Global Recognition January 24, 2018

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has been awarded “Deal of the Year Award” by China Business Law Journal for the firms work for the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Angola.

The Chinese Business Law Journal Awards are presented annually and are based on nominations from in-house counsel and other qualified observers, and research conducted by China Business Law Journal’s editorial team.

The firm advised the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Angola in respect of a US$4.1 billion Sinosure backed financing for the construction of the 2.1GW Caculo Cabaça hydropower project in the Middle Kwanza basin. This is the largest power project in Angolan history.

Upon completion, the project is expected to more than double the existing total installed hydropower capacity of Angola.

The Norton Rose Fulbright multi-jurisdictional team advising the Ministry was led by Beijing partner, Paul Wee Ei Don, and London partner, Madhavi Gosavi. Further assistance was provided by Beijing based associate Alex Cheung and London based associates Alexandra Jefferies and Jessica Melville.

Paul Wee commented:

“We are delighted to have won this award for our work for the Ministry. This award recognises the hard work of the entire team as we continue to provide complex, innovative and seamless advice to clients across the globe.”

The cross border team has also advised the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Angola on the US$760 million financing for the construction of the new Port of Caio in Carbinda which is the biggest investment to be made in Carbinda to date. The construction of the Port of Caio is an integral part of a new national infrastructure program of the Angolan Government and is in line with plans of the Angolan Government to reconstruct and improve the infrastructure of the Carbinda area. The Port of Caio will have a 675 meter terminal for large ships, 31 hectares of land area developed and include a breakwater to protect against winds and waves. Once completed, Port of Caio will double the existing capacity to 50,000 containers per year and will serve as the most important gateway to regional and international trade for Carbinda and Angola.

Norton Rose Fulbright has also advised the Ministry on the US$150 million financing for the construction of the Luanda new international airport railway station and railway lines from the Baia railway station to the Luanda new international airport railway station connecting the new airport with the Luanda city 40 kilometers away. The railway station will complete and form part of the US$3.8 billion new international airport. The new international airport railway station and railway lines will be important assets for the Angolan Government as they make the new international airport much more accessible by linking it with the rest of the traffic-heavy Luanda area.
