Ilané Swift

Biography

Ilané is an associate in our banking and finance team based in Johannesburg. She focusses on trade and cross border commodity finance, guarantees and letters of credit, leveraged debt restructures, leveraged finance, sales and purchase of receivables, borrowing base facilities and acquisition finance and general banking and finance-related work.

Ilané joined the firm in 2023 as a Candidate Attorney as was appointed as an Associate in 2025. She holds a LLB degree (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria.

  • Cox Energy South Africa Proprietary Limited - assisted with advising Cox Energy South Africa Proprietary Limited (previously known as Coxabengoa Energy South Africa Proprietary Limited) in terms of a Sale of Business Agreement in respect of which Cox Energy bought the Business of Optipower (a division of Murray & Robers Limited) (in business rescue) established by the terms of their Joint Venture Agreement. The purchase was negotiated with the Business Rescue Practitioners and Competition Commission for an intermediate merger was sought and approved. Employees were transferred pursuant to section 197. Deal lead was Steve Chemaly, Partner in the banking and finance team, who managed the finance and commercial aspects, supported by his lead associate, Ilané Swift and together they managed and co-ordinated all the aspects of this matter.
  • Trafigura Pte. Ltd - assisted with advising as Lenders Counsel in releasing and cancelling the Term loan facility agreement and Guarantee in the amount of USD 5,000,000 entered into, with Ilima Coal Company Proprietary Limited (as Borrower) and Ilima Coal Resources Proprietary Limited (as Guarantor) as well as the cancellation of the Registered and Unregistered Securities. Deal lead was Steve Chemaly, Partner in the banking and finance team, supported by his lead associate, Ilané Swift and together they managed and co-ordinated all the aspects of this matter.
  • UBS Switzerland AG - assisted as Lenders Counsel from a South African law perspective on the refinancing of IXM SA’s Secured Uncommitted Borrowing Base Revolving Credit Facility Agreement of up to USD 1,000,000,000. The global matter was led overall by NRF Paris Office (Janet Buttwerworth, Partner in the EMEA Banking and Finance Team). Deal lead was Steve Chemaly, Partner in the banking and finance team, supported by his lead associate, Ilané Swift.   • HSBC Corporate Trustee company (UK) Limited - assisted Lenders Counsel with the refinancing of Wogen Resources Limited in terms of its borrowing base facility agreement in the amount of US$125,000,000 made available to Wogen Resources Limited (as Borrower) by advising on South African Law pledges and securities provided by Wogen Resources South Africa Proprietary Limited, a member of the Wogen Group.   • Development Bank of Southern Africa Limited - assisted Lenders Counsel in respect of a Project Preparation Facility Agreement, as well as a Call Option Agreement, entered into with ZF Devco Zanzibar Limited, in the amount of USD 220,000,000. Deal lead was Steve Chemaly, Partner in the banking and finance team, supported by his lead associate, Ilané Swift.
  • Nedbank Limited - advised Lenders Counsel on the refinancing of Exemplar REITail Limited (as Borrower), which involved advancing a Revolving Credit Facility in the amount of R400 000 000 as well as a Term Loan in the amount of R401 000 000, to the Borrower. Deal lead was Raghemah Hendricks, Director in the banking and finance team, supported by Ilané Swift.
  • Standard Bank of South Africa Limited - advised Lenders Counsel on the refinancing of Exemplar REITail Limited (as Borrower), which involved advancing a Term Loan to Exemplar in the amount of R801 000 000 to the Borrower.
