Globally, the transport sector is responsible for approximately 20 per cent of all carbon emissions. Companies in the aviation, shipping, rail and road transport and freight sectors have long been conscious of the imperative for carbon emissions reduction, with improvements in the fuel efficiency of their fleets also helping to mitigate their exposure to often volatile fuel prices. Transitioning to less polluting forms of fuel will however require significant investment, time and the implementation of innovative and in some cases untested technologies. How quickly such solutions can be made commercially viable and implemented on a global basis is one of the most pressing issues facing the sector today.
