Canada: A world energy superpower

Energy—Renewables, oil and gas

Canada is a world energy superpower. Our thriving oil, gas and renewables sectors put Canada in the lead of global energy production, development and technological innovation.

Major long-term government investments in renewable energy have recently been made in Canada. This is opening up the wind, solar and biogas sectors to a new era of development and production. Large new hydro projects have also been announced. Canada is the largest producer of hydroelectricity in the world with more than 13% of global output. Over 60% of the total power generated in Canada comes from hydro sources.

We were the first legal practice in Canada to establish a dedicated Cleantech practice. We advise Canadian and international clients as the demand for renewable energy grows around the world. This includes projects to develop wind farms, geothermal power, advanced energy storage, hydro, emerging technologies and more.

Canada’s oil sands are the second-largest proven crude oil reserve is the world. Only Saudi Arabia has more. We work with Canadian and international clients—in established and developing markets—as they develop this phenomenal resource.

Canada also provides one of the world‘s most politically secure and stable supplies of oil. This has attracted tens of billions of dollars in investments from companies in Canada, Asia, Europe and the United States. Canada is the largest supplier of crude oil and petroleum products to the U.S.

Our Calgary office leads our work with clients in Canada’s oil sands.

Canada is the world’s third-largest producer and exporter of natural gas. Conventional reserves have been developed for a century. Unconventional gas reservoirs are abundant as well, including shale gas and coalbed methane. These types of unconventional sources account for much of the growth in Canada’s natural gas supply.

Our energy team has been a part of the evolution of natural gas markets in Canada. We have appeared before federal and provincial regulatory tribunals on the sector. We advise clients on market rule interpretation and development, rate setting, licensing, compliance and approval matters.
