Breaking new ground with the Nelson Mandela Foundation

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright is proud to have launched its global fundraising initiative with the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Norton Rose Fulbright aims to raise US$250,000 for the Nelson Mandela Foundation through a series of local and global fund-raising events.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation sets out to ensure Nelson Mandela’s legacy continues, and to promote sustainable solutions to critical social challenges – shelter, education, literacy, and food security.

As part of Norton Rose Fulbright’s global fundraising challenge, in February 2017 over 160 employees from 24 offices around the world took part in a volunteering project in the Tsakane township, Johannesburg. The team began the build of a new facility for local non-profit, Menzi Children's Home, in addition to working with Food and Trees for Africa at Vuyani Primary School to support their learner feeding scheme. The project saw colleagues working together to undertake a number of tasks, including digging foundations, making bricks and planting sustainable food gardens.

The event marked the launch of ‘Challenge 67’, the theme that will run through Norton Rose Fulbright’s fundraising initiative. It takes inspiration from the message of Mandela Day - “Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes” and henceforth make every day a Mandela Day.

In November 2009 the United Nation’s General Assembly declared 18 July as the Nelson Mandela International Day. This is a global call to action, which celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, and the ability to make an impact.

Peter Martyr, global chief executive, comments:

“We are delighted to be working with The Nelson Mandela Foundation, whose underlying message ultimately aligns with our own focus on addressing disability, diversity and inclusion issues in the workplace and in society more widely. A number of our team have already taken up their challenge to fundraise for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and we look forward to further initiatives to help us attain our global fund-raising target.”

Sbu Gule, chairman, Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa comments:

“It was most humbling to see so many of our global colleagues who took the time and travelled at their own expense, to come to South Africa to participate in such a worthy cause. The activities in February are only the start of the journey and we are proud to be part of this project that will help change the lives of the people living in this community forever.”

Sello Hatang, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation said:

“The Nelson Mandela Foundation is touched by not only the commitment of Norton Rose Fulbright, but its action to make a contribution to address some of the social challenges society faces. Norton Rose Fulbright shows us through its actions how to make every day a Mandela Day.”

Mr Hatang noted Norton Rose Fulbright’s dedication to the activities that seek to make a difference in ordinary people’s lives and in making the world a better one for generations to come.

“We are truly encouraged by this work and we look forward to working together for the next year to address social challenges where individuals do not have the means to change their lives around”, he concluded.

Challenge 67, in aid of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, follows the success of Norton Rose Fulbright’s previous global fundraising projects with the Special Olympics (2015-16) and the BP MS 150 annual charity bike ride (2014-15).
