Tomas Gärdfors is a banking lawyer based in London. He specialises in structured cross-border transactions.
Tomas advised lenders and borrowers on debt facilities for acquisitions, projects and other transactions. Dually qualified in Sweden and England, he is head of the practice’s Nordic Group. His experience includes advising on the £280 million public takeover of Robert Wiseman Dairies, on the €50 billion rescue package to Hypo Real Estate Holding AG, on the £5.5 billion financing for the proposed takeover of a UK listed company and on public and private international law matters relating to the multi-billion Icelandic banks collapse. Tomas spent 8 years in our Frankfurt office.
In Chambers Global 2012 Tomas is commended for his international strength of his practice being dually qualified in England and Sweden. In Legal 500 Germany 2010-2011 Tomas is particularly praised for his “strong analytical skills” and his “good understanding of the underlying, complex issues”. He was listed in Chambers & Partners Global (Germany), 2010 as a “key individual” and in Chambers & Partners, 2009 as “renowned for the international scope of his practice”, and applauded by competitors for his “excellent negotiation skills and judicious approach”. He was also mentioned in Chambers & Partners, 2008 as being “commercially minded”, and a “rising star”. Tomas is repeatedly commended by interviewees for his positive attitude; he is said to be “an extremely competent lawyer who can spot the client’s priorities and adapt his performance to meet them”. Tomas is qualified both as an advokat in Sweden and as a solicitor in England and Wales. He is fluent in Swedish, English and German and has working knowledge of Danish and Norwegian.
