John is an insurance lawyer based in Sydney. John specialises in acting in defence and advising on coverage in professional, financial and D&O claims.

He has substantial experience in defending a wide range of professionals including financial advisers and planners, insurance brokers, tax professionals and accountants. He acts in defence of a range of construction professionals including architects, engineers, surveyors and designers.  Of note, he has recently advised a major Australian stockbroker on establishing a redress scheme for investors who have defrauded by a rogue trader.  He is also advising a financial advisory firm on its exposure to over 2,000 individual claims.

In the class action space, John is currently acting in a coverage and monitoring counsel role in some of Australia's most prominent class actions in the securities, D&O and general liability space.  He also has considerable experience of handling claims concerning financial institutions and has advised insurers in respect of a number of high profile cases.

John also provides coverage advice and acts in litigation on other risks, such as construction and public and product liability.

John co-leads the cyber incident response team and has established a market leading offering servicing the majority of local and international cyber insurers.  John has advised in a significant number of cyber incidents, claims and investigations.  He is currently advising in relation to what has been dubbed Australia's largest data breach to-date.

    • Acting as coverage counsel in a Securities Class Action brought against the directors of an ASX listed telecommunications company alleging misleading and deceptive conduct in various capital raisings
    • Advising on coverage in an EPL class action brought by over 8,000 group members alleging mis-categorisation of their employment status and sham contracting
    • Acting as coverage counsel in the class action arising from the detainment of refugees on Manus Island
    • Advising on the availability of indemnity to the directors of an international construction conglomerate relating to a Securities Class Action and an AFP investigation into allegations of bribery arising from the construction of gas pipeline in Iraq
    • Advising on the availability of indemnity to one of Australia's largest banks for a claim brought by ex-customers alleging duress and mismanagement of the sale process of their shares seeking damages in excess of AUD2 billion
    • Advising a global broker in relation to its potential exposure arising from a claim made under an ISR policy for property damage and business interruption losses in excess of AUD180 million
    • Advising insurers on a copyright and patent infringement case relating to a pharmaceutical devise which is said to have given rise to losses in excess of AUD20 million
    • Advising insurers on the availability of indemnity to a corporate advisory firm for a Securities Class Action arising from the merger of two of Australia's largest mining entities in 2008
    • Advising on the availability of indemnity for various claims made arising from social engineering/'whaling' scam
    • Advising on the availability of indemnity to a high profile Australian phosphate mining company for an international arbitration award of AUD70 million
    • Advising a US-based e-retail company on its disclosure obligations after its Australian customer database was compromised.  Managing the notification of the incident to the company's Australian and New Zealand customers, regulators and law enforcement bodies, as well as negotiating credit monitoring and ID protection services for impacted customers
