Dean W. Steele is a transportation attorney, specializing in shipping transactions and maritime litigation based in New York.
He has experience handling an extensive range of international transactions in the areas of shipping finance, compliance and regulatory matters, bankruptcy and restructuring, as well as commercial shipping. Dean has represented shipping companies in connection with the sale and purchase of various types of vessels, including complex oil supply vessels, shipping joint ventures, vessel financing and registration, as well as shipbuilding contracts, management and agency agreements, and charter parties.
Dean has broad range of experience in maritime litigation and arbitration matters, including charter party disputes, vessel arrests, shipbuilding contract controversies, as well as, pollution and environmental issues. He also has experience in the sale, purchase, insurance and financing of private aircraft, yachts and islands.
Dean recently represented ExxonMobil in relation to obtaining arrest warrants for the seizure of eight of Bouchard Transportation Co. vessels as security to ExxonMobil for unpaid fuel and lubricants. Within days, and before the vessels were seized by the US Marshals Service, the team worked out a settlement whereby Bouchard's owner paid ExxonMobil's claims in full, as well as lawyer fees and costs.
Dean is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Brooklyn Law School. He is a Master Mariner with 10 years of sea service on underway replenishment vessels, including ammunition carrying vessels, container ships, tankers, ROROs, and a hospital ship. He was admitted the NY Bar in September 2000. Prior to joining Norton Rose, Dean spent 11 years as the Associate General Counsel for a private ship owner, before which he was an associate at a global law firm.
