Dr. Uwe Eppler is a tax lawyer based in Hamburg. He is qualified as lawyer and certified tax advisor (Steuerberater). He is skilled in national and international tax law with a particular focus on the industry sectors real estate, insurance, technology, energy, transport as well as banking and finance.
Uwe has extensive experience advising on the tax and corporate aspects of mergers and acquisitions (in particular, pre-acquisition structuring and post-acquisition integration), reorganisations, restructurings and the tax aspects of financings.
He is highly regarded for real estate tax advice (including tax efficient real estate transfer tax structures) and advises clients from the insurance sector on multinational insurance propositions, insurance premium tax, VAT as well as warranty & indemnity insurance. Moreover, he advises on transfer pricing, tax efficient international IP and licensing structures and other inter-company arrangements and represents clients in tax audits and tax litigations.
Uwe has repeatedly been recognized by various leading legal publications. The German legal directory JUVE 2015/2016 recommends him for tax law and quotes a client describing him as ‘responsive’ and praising his ‘high commercial understanding’. JUVE 2014/2015 praised him for his ‘outstanding legal knowledge’ and ‘efficient work’. In Legal 500 Deutschland 2015 Uwe is presented as a frequently recommended lawyer for tax law. In Chambers Europe 2014, he is ranked for tax law and described by clients as ‘exceptionally responsive’. In Chambers Europe 2013 he was referred to as a ‘fantastic lawyer and tax adviser’.
Uwe studied law at the University of Hamburg and was admitted to the Bar in 2002. In the same year, he received the Hans-Flick-award for his doctoral thesis on tax avoidance in national and international tax law. He qualified as certified tax advisor (Steuerberater) in 2007. Uwe started his career at Andersen and E&Y and later on joined the Hamburg office of a leading US law firm, for which he also worked on secondment in Chicago. From 2006 to 2011, Uwe worked with another leading global law firm where he headed the German tax group.
Uwe is fluent in both German and English.
