Kyle Havart-Crans
Biography
Kyle Havart-Crans practises regulatory law and corporate work, with a focus on the energy industry, including upstream and midstream oil and gas, renewable energy, energy storage and alternative energy sources.
In private practice, Kyle has worked on the acquisition and development of renewable energy projects. He also regularly assists with routine environmental and regulatory matters, including permitting, applications and advising clients on a wide range of issues. Kyle also has experience with ESG issues, including greenhouse gas offset crediting and programs, Indigenous matters and net-zero initiatives.
Kyle has also spent time working in industry as legal counsel for a major midstream natural gas processing company. In that role he worked on commercial and procurement contracts and advised on operational issues. He also worked on a team developing a major pipeline project and assisted with regulatory and permitting work with a number of provincial regulators and the Canadian Energy Regulator.
Prior to law school Kyle worked as a fisheries biologist in Ontario for a non-governmental organization representing First Nations in the upper Great Lakes region.

Kyle has acted in the following matters:
- Conducted environmental and public due diligence on the purchase of large renewable energy projects in various provinces
- Conducted research and drafting of court documents in a bankruptcy and insolvency dispute centered on qualification of abandonment and reclamation obligations
- Advised a midstream company on a multi-million-dollar purchase of carbon offset credits
- Conducted research and drafted submissions for a hearing in front of the Alberta Energy Regulator regarding declarations against directors
- Advised an oil and gas company subject to an Environment and Climate Change Canada investigation
- Conducted research and drafted submissions in a tariff hearing before the Alberta Utilities Commission
- Advised a mining company on the procurement of transportation on Canadian railways and railway cars from international suppliers
