Jane Snoddy Smith is Norton Rose Fulbright's Global Co-Head of Real Estate..

Jane advises pension funds, REITS and other institutional investors in equity and debt investments, including multiple $1B+ national portfolio acquisitions and dispositions. Her expertise  encompasses joint venture investments, development and sale/leasebacks of multifamily, office and hospitality projects, hospitals and medical facilities, shopping centers and public private partnerships, including the Waller Creek project and evaluation of distressed properties

She has negotiated settlements in disputes in multiple states involving real estate contracts, development agreements, leases, purchase options and environmental remediation.

Jane has presented numerous papers, including "The Art Behind the Deal: Insights into Real Estate Investment Committee"  at the American College of Real Estate Attorneys in New York on October 7, 2016 and "Doing Business in a Global Environment" at the at the annual CREWNetwork conference in New York on October 21, 2016 and "That's My Space!  ROFOs, ROFRs and Expansion Options:  Win, Lose or Draw?" at the ICSC Law Conference in Hollywood, Florida on October 28, 2016.  Jane is a Governor, Treasurer and Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers; a past President of CREW Network, past Chair of the CREW Network Foundation and she is a founder the Center for Women in Law at the University of Texas. School of Law. 

Jane has been named three times as a "Woman of Influence," by the Real Estate Forum, and she has been recognized by Best Lawyers for her work in Real Estate Law (2008-2019), Lawyer of the Year: Austin:  litigation – real estate (2015, 2017) and Legal 500 US, recommended lawyer, Real Estate (2013-2017). She has been named a Texas Super Lawyer eight times, and was also honored by Euromoney Legal Media Group as the Best in Real Estate at the 2015 Americas Women in Business Law Awards.

Outside of work, Jane works with organizations to provide housing for people with disabilities and low incomes, and and she is the chair of the National Homelessness Task Force of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Jane's recent projects include representing:

  • The sale of 46 open-air shopping centers in 20 states valued at $1.43 billion to a joint venture of a private equity firm
  • A unique multiple phase public private partnership with a conservancy to develop and operate 28 acres of public facilities and parkland along the largest urban creek in the nation, drafting and negotiating a development agreement to design, finance, develop, construct, operate and manage the district
  • One of the largest public retirement systems in a transaction recognized nationally as a mega deal in the purchase of a portfolio of over 90 buildings containing more than 9 million square feet of industrial property located in nine states; the innovative structure guaranteed a closing without requiring the purchaser to select properties or to allocate the purchase price until just before closing
  • A national investment advisor to a state pension fund in the Midwest in the build-to-suit acquisition of multi-family housing in a city planned redevelopment project financed through tax abatements; city resolutions were successfully obtained so that all contract milestones were achieved on time
  • A Canadian developer in the development, sale and financing of a regional shopping center with an associated planned residential, office and industrial community in the southeast involving a master plan of easements to divert existing waterways and control flooding in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; all government permits were obtained and a layer of multiple covenant and restriction agreements permitted the development of the properties; the diversion of water also provided a recreational lake
  • Acquisition and development of headquarters facilities for a financial services company with more than a trillion dollars in assets, including tax incentives and a sale leaseback
  • The nation's second largest bank in the finance of a U.S. REIT's acquisition of a substantial portion of the U.S. retail assets of a Dutch holding company; this transaction was completed on a fast track basis over a holiday season
  • A national insurance company's foreign investment fund in the sale of a retail shopping center in Chicago prior to the completion of a Remedial Action Plan and receipt of a No Further Action letter; the client was able to close the fund as scheduled
  • Lease and operating agreement for municipal hospital system hospitals, medical office buildings, and other real estate with major university medical school
  • A pension fund advisor in the acquisition of a historic downtown Boston office building involving zoning issues and neighboring redevelopment concerns; the client was able to complete acquisitions within the quarter, allowing them to meet financial projections
  • Joint venture transactions for state teachers retirement system in numerous multiple phase multifamily projects with different national developers
