New York lawyer appointed as vice chair of the American Bar Association’s international tax planning committee

The American Bar Association (ABA) has appointed K. Eli Akhavan (New York) as vice chair of the ABA international tax planning committee.

The international tax planning committee focuses on estate planning and administration, including tax structuring issues for US clients with foreign property or contacts and non‐US clients with US property or US beneficiaries. The committee prepares comments on legislation and regulations, publishes information for Section members on these topics and participates in or sponsors Section CLE programs.

Akhavan specializes in representing both US and non-US ultra high net worth clients. Additionally, he has considerable knowledge of tax structuring and international estate planning and is committed to assisting the ABA in improving the laws that affect international taxation. He advises cross-border clients on all aspects of international estate planning matters, including foreign trusts, pre-immigration and expatriation planning and planning for foreigners who wish to purchase US residential and real investment property. Additionally, Akhavan implements domestic and foreign asset protection structures involving trusts and other vehicles to protect clients from creditors and integrates innovative private placement life insurance planning into his clients' plans as an estate and asset protection tool.
