Norton Rose Fulbright is one of Alberta's Top 75 Employers for 2022

Canada Press release January 25, 2022

Norton Rose Fulbright’s Calgary office is one of the best places to work in Alberta in 2022, as named by Mediacorp Canada. The global law firm is delighted to be one of the province’s top 75 employers, set apart for offering its employees forward-thinking workplace initiatives, benefits and policies.

Mediacorp Canada selected the firm for many reasons, including its commitment to supporting working parents by providing parental leave top-up for mothers, fathers and adoptive parents, offering access to subsidies for IVF treatment and implementing flexible working solutions. Winners were announced in a digital feature magazine published online on both the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal websites, preview here.

Roger Smith, Managing Partner of the Calgary office, said:

“It has been a tough couple of years for everyone, but I am thrilled that our firm has made tangible steps to ensure our peoples’ mental health is prioritized; to provide flexibility in their family lives; and to support them at every step of the way during this tumultuous time. One such Calgary office initiative is the Ask Us (almost) Anything monthly interview series, which intends to keep people connected and welcome new people to the team.

It is a great start to 2022 to be named a Top Employer in Alberta, and my hope is that later this year we will be back in our Calgary office reunited with our colleagues in person once again.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the firm’s focus primarily centered around one of its business principles: Unity. Fostering the collegial culture of the firm, and keeping its people connected both technologically and emotionally was key. Some examples include prioritizing frequent and transparent communication right from the beginning of the pandemic, to providing a sustainable, high-performing culture where its people are empowered to choose how, when and where they work. Norton Rose Fulbright quickly armed its people not only with the equipment they needed to successfully work remotely, but developed and delivered training sessions to assist with the transition and launched a wellness committee focused on the mental health and well-being of all its people.

The law firm went a step further, recognizing that many employees had increased personal or family demands, by implementing a flex program for legal assistants and business services employees whereby they could temporarily cut their working hours to prioritize their personal needs and commitments. And the firm’s fitness reimbursement policy relaunched in January 2021 allowing employees to purchase home fitness equipment, online workout classes, and meditation apps to better align with agile working needs.

Alberta’s Top 75 Employers is an editorial competition led by Mediacorp Canada, publisher of employment-related periodicals. Applicants are evaluated using eight criteria: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social activities; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
