Houston lawyer wins Texas Bar Foundation’s Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Award

The Texas Bar Foundation recently honored Dudley Oldham (Houston) by selecting him as one of four recipients of its Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Awards in 2020.
The award recognizes lawyers who have practiced at least 50 years, adhered to the legal profession’s highest principles and traditions and provided exemplary service to the public and the communities in which they live.
Oldham, a retired partner who joined the Fulbright firm in 1966, is an accomplished litigator whose practice focused on complex litigation primarily in the areas of energy, patent infringement and trade secret litigation, commercial and business matters, class actions, arbitration, securities, aviation, insurance disputes and mass torts. He served as lead counsel in many large, complex disputes in federal and state courts and abroad. A certified mediator and arbitrator, he is also a member of the AAA Texas Large Complex Case Panel and CPR.
While serving on the firm’s Executive, Policy and Litigation Management committees for more than a quarter-century, Oldham helped set the firm’s future.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has been active in community and legal professional affairs. He served as Chair of the Advisory Council for the Institute for Molecular Medicine, was a member of the University of Texas Health’s Executive Committee and the university’s Advisory Council of the McGovern Medical School.
Oldham, who received his BA and JD at the University of Texas, continues to serve his alma mater as a member of the President’s Associates, the School of Liberal Arts Advisory Council, and the Executive Committee of the Chancellor’s Council of the UT System.
He received many professional honors during his career. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and chaired its Judiciary Committee and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and served on its National Board of Directors and as President of its Houston Chapter.
Oldham also has served as Chair of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association, Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Independence of the Judiciary, the ABA Commission revising the Model Code of Federal Judicial Conduct. He also was a member of the Advisory Council of the National Judicial College and the National Center for State Courts, where he was honored with admission to the Chief Justice Warren Burger Society. He has served as the Chairman of the Board and President of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
The Bar Foundation commissioned an oral history to recognize and preserve the accomplishments of Oldham’s legal career. He and other recipients of the award were to be feted at the foundation’s annual dinner June 26 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, but that event may not be held due to COVID-19.
He lives in Houston with Judy, his wife of 55 years. Their two sons, Steve and Mike, along with their wives and five children, also reside in Houston.
