Likonelo is the Africa Regional Head of IP and specialises in intellectual property prosecution, enforcement and advisory. She joined the practice in 2008. She holds a BA Law, LLB and LLM in Commercial law and she has 15 years' of experience in IP Law. She is a Fellow of SAIIPL and a qualified trade mark practitioner and member of INTA. Likonelo serves as on SAIIPL Copyright and on Student Liaison Committees and is a member the Licensing Executives Society International. She is ranked as notable practitioner by Chambers for two successive years.
Likonelo is annually invited to present lectures regarding intellectual property issues to the Black Lawyers Association in its Commercial Law Certificate Course. She is member of the International Trade Mark Association (INTA). She is a resident contributor to INTA's online Country Guides 'Essential Information on Trade Mark Protection Worldwide', which has been, named one of the ten best online trademark tools by World Trademark Review. She also authored the South African chapter in the "World Intellectual Property Rights and Remedies" published by West Thomson Reuters and co-author of the LexisNexis' Practical Guidance Intellectual Property Law is a convenient online reference tool that covers all legal aspects relating to creations of the intellect (2013) and authored a chapter on copyright law in the same publication.
Likonelo's has extensive experience in both non-contentious and contentious IP, locally, across Africa and globally. On non-contentious IP, she deals with prosecution of trade marks, copyright opinions, transactional IP work (due hypothecations, diligences, licensing assignments, and software agreements). On contentious IP she represents clients such as PwC and Growthpoint Properties Limited in various IP disputes in the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Company Tribunal.
Likonelo has been involved in mergers and acquisitions from an intellectual property perspective, furnishing advice and conducting due diligence exercises, advising on and drafting licence agreements, advising on and drafting security arrangements (hypothecations), and other transactional matters which affect IP rights.
Likonelo has represented various global companies and blue chip clients, including the e-commerce global technology company Alibaba Group Holdings, Accolade Wines, Afrisam (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd, BNP Paribas, Bridgestone and Firestone Group of Companies, Diageo PLC, Diageo South Africa, Growthpoint Properties Limited, the Industrial Development Corporation, Pearson (Group), Energizer Brands, Koch Industries and subsidiaries, PWC, EY, Sharp Middle East FZE, and Transnet Engineering.
Likonelo is listed as a recommended lawyer for intellectual property in Legal500, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and in PLC Private Equity Cross-border Handbook 2010. She has also been listed as a "Trademark Star" in the IP Stars, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Likonelo wrote a chapter on SA IP law which was published in the West Thomson Reuters Release 2015-3 of “World Intellectual Property Rights and Remedies”.
