Biography
Kate Dwyer is a litigation lawyer in our Disputes Practice Group based in Sydney.
Kate has predominantly acted for public sector clients and focused on litigation, investigations and inquiry work for State and Commonwealth government agencies.
Kate has extensive experience defending negligence, intentional tort and sexual discrimination claims for various government agencies including the Department of Defence, Department of Social Services, New South Wales Police Force, Department of Communities and Justice, Department of Education and NSW Health. Kate also has experience defending general liability claims for Sydney Trains and Westpac General Insurance Limited.
In addition to her disputes practice, Kate has an inquests and inquiries practice including investigations in relation to fraud and governance matters. Most recently Kate has acted for Transport for NSW in Operation Wyvern, a public hearing at the Independent Commission Against Corruption and at coronial inquest. Kate also assisted the Department of Defence respond to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
Kate has also been involved in the administration of the Compensation Assessment Scheme set up to compensate victims of a data breach that occurred on the website of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (now named the Department of Home Affairs), pursuant to HYYL and Privacy Commissioner [2023] AATA 2961.
Kate has extensive experience in providing strategic advice in relation to liability, causation and quantum as well as disclosure, document management and governance issues. She manages claims throughout various stages of litigation in both New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory including interlocutory proceedings, alternative dispute resolution and trials. Kate also has extensive experience in senior executive level witness preparation for large scale inquires and investigations.
Before working with NRF, Kate was a solicitor at a national insurance law firm practicing in asbestos litigation.
