Biography

Iain Hawthorn is a senior compliance manager based in London. He advises on a broad range of regulatory conduct matters, conduct risk and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) requirements, and has particular experience in financial services across the retail banking, consumer lending (consumer credit) and mortgages sectors.

Iain advises clients on how to practically interpret FCA requirements across governance, conduct and regulatory risk, risk and compliance frameworks and the end-to-end customer journey. He also supports clients with matters such as achieving regulatory authorization, accountability regime compliance, design and operating effectiveness reviews of systems and controls and the design and delivery of redress and remediation schemes.

He has advised a number of multinational clients on their risk and compliance frameworks in the context of regulatory requirements and sound market practice. Iain's advice spanned supporting a client in building its risk and compliance framework from the ground up to advising a client on enhancements it could make across its framework in the context of regulatory expectation and sound market practice. He has also program-managed the end-to-end delivery of the adjudicator role on a large Scheme of Arrangement involving a consumer credit lending business.

Prior to joining the firm, Iain spent five years working in one of the Big4 financial services risk and regulation practices. He also worked at the FCA and its predecessor body, the Financial Services Authority, for eight years during which time he supervised a number of dual and solo regulated firms and worked on the regulatory reform programme to establish the FCA.

Iain works across a variety of regulatory conduct engagements, including the following:

  • Helping clients set up and establish a new financial services business, including regulatory authorisations
  • Regulatory conduct reviews in respect of Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) compliance
  • Conduct risk management frameworks and conduct management information (conduct MI)
  • Compliance framework reviews / compliance effectiveness reviews
  • Product governance reviews
  • Review of regulatory conduct policies across the customer journey
  • Customer outcomes reviews across the customer journey
  • Sales practices, including provision of regulated advice to customers
  • Post-sales handling reviews, including regulated complaints handling, collections / arrears and repossessions handling practices
  • Vendor and buy-side due diligence reviews.

Iain has also supported clients in setting up and executing consumer redress schemes, project managed the delivery of the adjudication on Schemes of Arrangement and supported clients going through an FCA enforcement investigation.
