Biography
Nick is a litigation attorney with a specialization in insurance and maritime law.
Nick's experience in insurance law includes advising on and being instructed in relation to general claims matters, cover disputes, subrogated recoveries, broker liability, and professional indemnity actions. Regularly instructed by the London and South African insurance markets, Nick currently advises leading insurance companies, both locally and internationally. His insurance focus encompasses matters pertaining to marine cargo, transportation, precious metals, and fine art.
Regarding admiralty law, Nick acts for owners and operators of vessels, as well as their insurers, in the prosecution and defense of maritime claims within the High Court's admiralty jurisdiction. Nick's admiralty experience also involves protecting the interests of vessel owners and operators in connection with collisions and claims for hire and demurrage.
Nick holds bachelor's degrees in law and commerce from the University of South Africa and was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2015. He is an executive committee member of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa and serves as its Cape Chapter Secretary. Nick is recognized by Legal 500 as a recommended individual for Shipping and Transportation, and by Chambers and Partners as Up and Coming.

Shipping:
- Representing vessel owners and their insurers in respect of claims for cargo damage.
- Arresting and attaching bunkers, cargo, and other property, followed by successful negotiations for security against the release of arrested and attached property.
- Advised a major petrochemical company on the arrest of bunkers aboard its Vessel.
- Defending a multinational commodity trading and mining company in connection with a claim against it following an explosion aboard a vessel transporting its product.
- Representing a foreign government concerning damage caused to its navy vessel following a violent storm in October 2017.
- Conducting various LMAA and LCIA proceedings concerning the recovery of outstanding demurrage.
- Advising a major fishing entity following a collision with a cargo vessel. Represented a Nevis-based ship owner involved in an associated ship arrest in South Africa.
Marine Insurance:
- Acted in a maritime insurance dispute following the theft by a criminal syndicate of imported consignments owned by a major South African retailer.
- Providing coverage advice and defending the interests of various insurers (including marine) regarding claims arising from the July 2021 period of civil unrest in South Africa.
- Pursuing subrogated recoveries for cargo interests based in various jurisdictions.
- Advising marine insurers on coverage considerations following severe floods in KwaZulu-Natal during April 2022.
Insurance:
- Regularly providing advice to underwriting managers and insurers concerning South African-based insurance claims.
- Successfully represented a major shipping company against an insurer in a dispute over cover.
- Defended an insurance company facing a large fire claim, which resulted in the claim being withdrawn.
- Advising insurers and London Underwriters concerning fine art, subrogated recoveries, and precious metals disputes, notably a multi-billion rand coverage dispute regarding precious metals.
- Representing and advising various insurers in disputes concerning stock throughput policies insuring precious metals and various other commodities.
