Chris Zavos is a dispute resolution lawyer in the marine, trade and energy team based in London. He specialises in shipping and energy matters, including BAR, hull (and IV), cargo, yacht, MII, war and liability insurances and claims under construction and operating policies. He has also advised extensively in relation to issues arising out of Somali piracy.

Chris acts extensively for Underwriters in London, Norway and Russia. Chris also advises in relation to collision and salvages as well as contractual shipping disputes. On energy matters, he advises under CAR and operating policies and is currently advising in relation to claims arising on offshore wind farms and FPSOs.

Chris is ad hoc legal adviser to the London market’s Joint Hull Committee and has been involved in a number new wording initiatives, including the International Hull Clauses in 2003. the London Marine Construction All Risks wording in 2007, as well as individual clauses addressing discrete issues, including piracy and Iranian sanctions.

Chris acted for the market in Arash v Groupama, the first English case to consider the effect of the EU Iranian sanctions on insurance. Other major cases in which Chris has acted include Exxon Valdez, Youell v Kara Mara, Balder FPSO, “Fedra”, “Princess of the Stars”, Kamal v Catlin and Arash v Groupama.

Chris is recommended for Shipping in both Chambers and Partners UK 2012 and Legal 500 UK 2011, where he is described “fully aware of the commercial implications facing insurers, as well as the technical legal aspects
