Well firstly you need to understand the issue and who is affected. If customers are affected then you may need to notify the regulator. And it’s important to retain the trust of the regulator, because if you don’t then it can actually be quite an expensive exercise. You need to be able to demonstrate to the regulator that you understand the expectations of your clients and that you are going to honour the promise made to them. Increasingly it’s this social contract that is the focus of the regulators and the media. In this regard it’s really important to have the right culture, because if you have the right culture then that’s the best path to the most timely and efficient resolution of the matter.
