Biography

Susannah Mitton is a litigation lawyer based in Sydney.

She has 20 years' experience as defence and coverage counsel both in-house and in private practice within the insurance and reinsurance industry.

As both a first instance and appellate litigator, she specialises in large scale complex multi-party litigation in Natural Catastrophes (including Bushfires & Floods), Financial Lines (including Directors & Officers Liability, Professional Indemnity, Investment Management), Trust Companies, ASIC Investigations, Public Examinations, Engineering & Construction claims (amongst other areas).

More recently, she played an integral role in assisting the successful running of Sunwater Ltd's defence in multiple class actions arising out of the 2011 Queensland floods. The proceeding is Australia's largest class action to date, with over 6,800 Group Members, and estimated damages in excess of AUD 2 billion.

She also assisted in successfully running the Kilmore East fires defence as part of three of the largest Class Actions (of their time) in Australia arising out of the Victorian Black Saturday bushfires (involving Billions of dollars' worth of claims). Notably, she also ran the defence in relation to the 2003 Canberra bushfires Class Actions for over six months in the ACT Supreme Court (which was the largest Class Action of its time). More recently, she is involved in complex financial lines litigated matters, part of which includes the a2 Milk Company Ltd Shareholder Class Actions that continue to run in both Australia and NZ.
