Biography

Des Yek is a commercial and public law lawyer in the Government team based in Canberra. He has worked closely with Government agencies throughout his career, including advising Government clients on administrative law and commercial matters, and working within Commonwealth Government agencies.

Des has prepared numerous privacy impact assessments for various Commonwealth Government clients, as well as for the ACT Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate. He has advised on legislative reforms and frameworks for a Commonwealth agency in relation to a Council of Australian Governments initiative, and represented the Commonwealth Government in matters before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in relation to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Des has Baseline clearance, and he has over 16 years of experience within the Australian Public Service prior to becoming a lawyer. He has an excellent understanding of government processes, based on his extensive government policy experience. His previous public service experience included senior policy and managerial roles at the Executive Level 1 and acting Executive Level 2 level with the (then) Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the Commonwealth Department of Education. He has led policy teams and provided high level policy advice to the Minister, ministerial advisers and senior departmental staff on current and emerging issues with government programs. Des' extensive experience means that he has a deep understanding of the unique Commonwealth operating environment, and understands how to support Commonwealth Government clients in navigating the complex policy, stakeholder and legal frameworks within which Government decisions are made.
